Digimon Comic Awards 2023

 Earlier this year (2023), the Digimon Comic(Manga) Award was announced with the main objective of opening submissions in Japan to discover potential contributors for a new Digimon manga. The results were officially revealed at DigiFes 2023.

The awards and prizes for the competition included:

- Grand Prize: 1 million yen

- Supplement to Grand Prize: The privilege to participate in the project of creating a new Digimon manga in collaboration with Toei, Bandai, and Shueisha V-Jump Editorial.

- Semi-Grand Prize: 500,000 yen

- Honorable Mention: 300,000 yen

- Final Choice: 50,000 yen

As for the eligible categories, they encompassed various genres, such as adventure, battle, gag, four-panel story, romantic comedy, or any work featuring Digimon.

The esteemed judges for the contest were Tenya Yabuno, a talented cartoonist who is currently publishing Digimon Dreamers in Saikyo Jump and the official Digimon website (also renowned as the artist for V-Tamer and the designer of numerous Digimon characters), and Kenji Watanabe, an experienced Digimon Designer, Shueisha V-Jump Editorial Department, Toei Animation, and Bandai.

Starting from February 12, 2023, submissions were welcomed to create an entirely new manga "Digital Monster." However, it appears that no Grand Prize winner was selected. Additional insights and comments from the judges will be published in the August 21st issue of V-Jump.

 

A principios de este año 2023, se anunció el Premio Digimon Comic (Manga) con el objetivo principal de abrir convocatorias en Japón para descubrir posibles colaboradores para crear un nuevo manga de Digimon. Los resultados se revelaron oficialmente en el DigiFes 2023.

Los premios para el concurso incluían:

- Gran Premio: 1 millón de yenes

- Complemento al Gran Premio: El privilegio de participar en el proyecto de creación de un nuevo manga de Digimon “Digital Monster” en colaboración con Toei, Bandai y la Editorial Shueisha V-Jump.

- Semi Gran Premio: 500,000 yenes

- Mención Honorífica: 300,000 yenes

- Finalistas: 50,000 yenes

En cuanto a las categorías elegibles, incluían diversos géneros, como aventura, batalla, comedia, tiras cómicas, comedia romántica o cualquier obra con Digimon.

Los distinguidos jueces del concurso fueron Tenya Yabuno, un talentoso mangaka (caricaturista) que actualmente publica Digimon Dreamers en Saikyo Jump y la web de Digimon (también conocido como el artista de V-Tamer y el diseñador de numerosos personajes de Digimon), y Kenji Watanabe, un experimentado diseñador de Digimon, Shueisha V-Jump Editorial, Toei Animation y Bandai.

A partir del 12 de febrero de 2023, se empezaron a aceptar las propuestas para crear un manga completamente nuevo de "Digital Monster". Sin embargo, parece que no se seleccionó ningún ganador para el primer premio. Además, se publicaron comentarios de los jueces en la edición del 21 de agosto dela revista japonesa V-Jump junto con las principales obras seleccionadas.

 

RESULTS

Digimon Bloom -Will the Digital Flower Scatter?- by Ōkutsuwa Waga (Runner-up prize)

Rira (Lila) Hashido lives her life with her partner, Lalamon, through the Digimon Summoning App. One day, news of the service termination is announced.

Not only will the Digimon stop accompanying their human friends, but the digital world within that application is also being erased. Lila can't do anything to stop it, and finally, she gives in to Infermon's proposal, agreeing to swap bodies with this Digimon. This way, she can spend the last moments before the entire digital world within the app is destroyed alongside Lalamon. Lalamon evolves into Lilamon and erases Infermon's appearance from her human friend, allowing her to reclaim her own body, while Infermon uses her human body in the real world. The application was deleted, but the webpage with Lila and Lalamon adorning it with flowers was never erased. At the end, whose hand reaches out to pick up the smartphone? As a curiosity, the protagonist plays a Digimon-themed game with her Digimon, where the final enemy was Infermon, and the attractive guy who captivated the protagonists was named Omega.

 

This story reminds us of the many times a Digimon game in the form of an application has been deleted, like Digimon Heroes, Links, or ReArise. Does that micro digital world get erased along with the game? Do those Digimon have souls? If so, what happens to them, where do they go? Do they see another game screen, or is it the end for them? If Digital Monsters are creations of humans, should it be up to humans to decide when to end them at will?

Digimon Florece -¿Se dispersará la Flor Digital?- por Ōkutsuwa Waga (Segundo premio)

Rira (Lila) Hashido vive su vida junto a su compañera, Lalamon, a través de la aplicación de invocación de Digimon. Un día, se anuncia el cese del servicio.

No solo los Digimon dejarán de acompañar a sus amigos humanos sino que el mundo digital dentro de esa aplicación también se está borrando. Lila no consigue hacer nada para detenerlo y finalmente cede ante la propuesta de Infermon y accede a cambiarse el cuerpo con este Digimon, así podrá pasar los últimos momentos antes de que todo el mundo digital dentro de la app sea destruido juunto a Lalamon. Ésta evoluciona en Lilamon y le borra la apariencia de Infermon a su amiga humana para que recupere la suya mientras Infermon usa su cuerpo humano en el mundo real. La aplicación fue eliminada pero la página web con Lila y Lalamon decorándola con flores jamás se borró. Finalmente, ¿de quién es la mano que se extiende para coger el teléfono móvil? Como curiosidad, la protagonista juega con su Digimon a un juego de temática Digimon donde el enemigo final era Infermon y el atractivo galán que tanto encandiló a las protagonistas se llamaba Omega.

Este relato nos recuerda a la multitud de veces que un juego en forma de aplicación de Digimon ha sido borrado como Digimon Heroes, Links o ReArise. ¿Ese micro mundo digital se borra junto con el juego? ¿Tienen alma esos Digimon? De ser así, ¿Qué ocurre con ella, dónde va? ¿Para ellos aparece otra pantalla de juego o es el final? ¿Si los monstruos Digitales son creación de los humanos deben ser éstos los que decidan cuando acabar con ellos a voluntad?

 

"Twenty Years Samurai" By Souda Ichigo (Honorable Mention)

Takenao lives with Kotemon, whom he raised during the Baby stage. One night, Takenao encounters a Digimon other than Kotemon for the first time.

For over twenty years, Kotemon has been with Takenao and hasn't advanced beyond the Rookie level since it lacks the opportunity to fight other Digimon, despite Takenao's efforts to let Kotemon release some of its fighting energy. One day, Takenao sees Yasyamon on the streets and believes it's an evolved Kotemon who hasn't revealed its true form to avoid angering Takenao, who always advised Kotemon to hide from others to avoid being discovered. However, he soon discovers that it's not the case; instead, Kotemon defends him from Yasyamon and its army of warriors who were causing accidents and electronic malfunctions. Finally, Kotemon evolves into Craniamon, transforming from a samurai to a knight. While it's uncertain if such Digimon will continue appearing in the real world, one thing is certain - Takenao no longer needs to be overprotective of Kotemon, now Craniamon, who now has no trouble carrying the heaviest grocery bags.

Is it possible that the long-held longing to evolve over the span of twenty years resulted in the evolution from Rookie to Mega in one go?

"Veinte años Samurai" por Souda Ichigo (Mención honorífica)

Takenao, quien vive junto a su compañero Kotemon, al que crió en la etapa de Baby, se encuentra una noche con otro Digimon que no es Kotemon por primera vez.

En los más de veinte años que lleva Kotemon con Takenao no ha pasado del nivel Rookie ya que no tiene oportunidad de luchar con otros Digimon a pesar de los esfuerzos que hace Takenao para que Kotemon libere algo de su energía de lucha propia de un Digimon. Un buen día Takenao ve a Yasyamon por las calles y cree que es Kotemon evolucionado que no se lo ha dicho porque piensa que Takenao se enfadaría ya que siempre le dice que debe esconderse de los demás para que no le descubran. Sin embargo, pronto descubre que no es así sino que Kotemon le defiende de Yasyamon y su ejército de guerreros que estaban causando accidentes a la vez que errores en aparatos electrónicos. Es así como al fin evoluciona, en nada menos que Craniamon, pasando de samurai a caballero. Aunque es incierto si seguirán apareciendo Digimon como esos en el mundo real, lo que es seguro es que Takenao ya no tiene motivos para ser sobreprotector con Kotemon, ahora Craniamon, quien no tiene problema alguno para cargar con la más pesada de las bolsas de la compra.

¿Será que las ganas de evolucionar acumuladas durante veinte años equivalen a pasar de Rookie a Mega (y no uno cualquiera sino un Royal Knight)?

"Digital Monster ー CHILDREN: CODE" by Ayumu Minato (Honorable Mention)

Children are passionately involved in hacking using "GaraKei" (traditional Japanese-style cell phone; "Galapagos" cell phone, a Japanese brand) and Digimon. Hinata finally acquires her long-awaited "GaraKei" ...

His grandfather gives it to him in exchange for teaching him how to use a modern smartphone. He wonders why he wants it. It's for raising Digimon, or simple computer viruses equipped with hacking tools known as Digimon, used to hack things like vending machines. The security measures of modern smartphones don't allow the installation of Digimon, so an old and functional cell phone is necessary. When his friends Kazuma and Mikage's Digimon are attacked by some boys to be hacked, they defend themselves by using commands like "back" (short for back door) and evolving them. Digimon become stronger through battles and by absorbing data from other Digimon. Another code is "Hack," which allows the attacked Digimon to be broken down into data for the champion to absorb. There are four types of codes when CK is added as the final digits of a code: BACK for escape, CRACK for destruction, HACK for hunting, and JACK for stealing. They use these codes to recover the confiscated phone containing Kazuma’s Greymon by triggering the school's fire alarm. However, after retrieving Kazuma's Greymon, it doesn't behave normally, and an error appears on the screen. That night, Greymon emerges from the phone and starts destroying everything in the city. Kazuma asks Mikage's Keramon and Hinata's Elecmon to destroy him since only another Digimon can stop a Digimon, but those Digimon also appear in the real world, though they are no match for Greymon. Then Hinata realizes that Digimon are more than just hacking tools; they are not just monsters or a simple child’s play. Elecmon protected Hinata, and now he considers Elecmon his friend. At that moment, Elecmon digivolves into Tyranomon and defeats Greymon. After that, all the Digimon disappeared, and when the ambulance and police arrived, the children didn't know what to tell them about what had happened. Although they didn't want to talk about the Digimon, adults wouldn't have believed them either. It will be their secret. On Kazuma's old phone model screen, a DigiEgg is shown. Kazuma eagerly awaits the day when the DigiEgg hatches and encounters the Digimon within, curious about what it will evolve into this time.

Los niños están apasionados con el hackeo utilizando "GaraKei" (teléfonos celulares de estilo tradicional japonés; teléfono "Galápagos", una marca japonesa) y Digimon. Hinata finalmente adquiere su tan anhelado "GaraKei" ...

Su abuelo se lo da a cambio de que le enseñe a usar un smartphone moderno. ¿Para qué lo quiere? Se pregunta. Para criar Digimon, o simples virus de ordenador equipados con herramientas de hackeo como se les conoce, ya que sirven para hackear por ejemplo máquinas expendedoras de bebidas. Las medidas de seguridad de los teléfonos móviles modernos no permiten instalar Digimon, es por eso que es necesario un celular antiguo y que funcione. Cuando los Digimon de sus amigos, Kazuma y Mikage, son atacados para ser hackeados por unos chicos, se defienden usando comandos como el de back (abreviatura de back door) y haciéndolos evolucionar. Los Digimon se hacen más fuertes a través de las batallas y absorviendo datos de otros Digimon. Otro código es el de Hack, el cual permite descomponer el Digimon atacado en datos para que el vencedor los pueda absorver. Existen 4 tipos de códigos cuando se añade CK como dígitos finales de un código: BACK para escapar, CRACK para destruir, HACK para cazar y JACK para robar, los cuales usan para recuperar el teléfono confiscado que contiene a Greymon de uno de los chicos activando la alarma de incendios de la escuela. Sin embargo después de recuperar el Greymon confiscado de Kazuma éste no se comporta normalmente y sale error en la pantalla. Durante esa noche Greymon sale del teléfono y empieza a derribar todo cuanto encuentra en la ciudad. Es por eso que Kazuma pide que el Keramon de Mikage y el Elecmon de Hinata lo destruyan, ya que solo otro Digimon sería capaz de detener a un Digimon, pero esos Digimon también aparecen en el mundo real, aunque no son rivales para Greymon. Entonces Hinata se da cuenta que los Digimon son algo más que herramientas de hackeo, no son solo monstruos o un simple juego, Elecmon le defendió y Hinata lo considera su amigo. En ese momento Elecmon digievoluciona en Tyranomon y vence a Greymon. Después de eso todos los Digimon desaparecieron y cuando la ambulancia y policía aparecieron los niños no sabían muy bien qué decirles sobre qué había pasado. Aunque no querían hablar de los Digimon, tampoco les hubieran creído, será su secreto. En la pantalla del modelo antiguo de teléfono de Kazuma se muestra un digihuevo. ¿Con qué Digimon se encontrará esta vez cuando eclosione y en qué evolucionará? Kazuma espera con ansias ese día.

 

“DIGIMON VARIANTS” by Ayumu Aoki (Honorable Mention)

One day, Daigo, a former Champion who stopped raising Digimon for a certain reason, helps a wounded ToyAgumon.

For 50 years, Digimon have been coexisting with humans in the form of multi-purpose apps, like Gabumon making weather predictions, or collaborating with firefighters and police, such as Dobermon. However, this year, 2023, the champion of the Digimon Grand Prix, Daigo Tatara, hasn't shown up. Ranma, this year's winner and last year's runner-up, complains that winning the competition without the best rival participating holds no value. Daigo achieved the powerful evolutionary route Agumon - Greymon - MetalGreymon, known as the "correct" route by the envious, with all other options considered wrong or failed. As a result, the streets are filled with abandoned Digimon, like ToyAgumon, whom Daimon rescues, feeling guilty for being the cause of discarded Digimon. ToyAgumon has a nightmare remembering his old partner Kan-chan, who abandoned him after evolving from Koromon to ToyAgumon since it wouldn’t be able to follow the correct route, that of the champion, as it wasn't an Agumon. Daigo's Digimon partner died a year ago, shortly after an exciting comeback victory in the competition, and has since remained in the form of a Digiegg. After sharing this with ToyAgumon, the latter leads him to an abandoned building where more Digimon variants have been abandoned, including Hyougamon, Nisedrimogemon, Psychemon, Tsukaimon, and Mikemon. These Digimon are refugees protecting themselves from a Digimon hunter who preys on discarded Digimon. It was at that moment when Daigo stumbled upon ToyAgumon, who had acted as bait to save a fellow Digimon and ended up injured. ToyAgumon asks Daigo to train them to become stronger and prove they don't deserve to be abandoned. It's an opportunity for Daigo to free himself from the guilt that torments him for using a strong Digimon and indirectly causing this situation. Daigo agrees, admitting that the problem is not about being stronger since kids nowadays prefer losing with a Gabumon rather than winning with a Geremon. With Daigo's training, Psychemon evolves into Gururumon, but it and the others die when the Digimon hunter reappears, who turns out to be Ranma Tachikawa and his partner Megadramon, Daigo's opponent in last year's championship and this year's winner. Ranma's goal is for his Digimon to absorb the data and become stronger to defeat Daigo someday. Once again, Daigo blames himself for everything. ToyAgumon encourages him, assuring him that nothing was a mistake, neither the variations in evolution nor Daigo's actions. Now is the time to prove it. With Daigo's support, ToyAgumon performs a Jogress evolution, fusing with the data of his deceased friends and evolving into SkullGreymon, who confronts Ranma's Megadramon evolved into Gigadramon. SkullGreymon disables Gigadramon's arms first, preventing a counterattack, and then delivers the final blow with its "Oblivion Bird," turning him into a Digiegg. Ranma surrenders and leaves. SkullGreymon starts to disappear, as a Jogress evolution with deceased Digimon couldn't last long. This time, no Digiegg is left, but Daigo has learned not to blame himself anymore. It was their choice, and dying after a victory was what his friends wanted. Daigo will always remember them, and now he feels ready for his Digiegg to finally hatch because he has discarded guilt and embraced a positive attitude that he can train his Digimon again. The story concludes with Daigo returning to the D-1 Grand Prix 2024 with a Greymon, but not an ordinary one, rather an unseen variant (Greymon 2010 from Xros Wars).

“DIGIMON VARIANTS” por Ayumu Aoki (Mención Honorífica)

Un día, Daigo, un antiguo Campeón que por alguna razón dejó de criar Digimon, ayuda a un ToyAgumon herido.

Hace 50 años que los Digimon coexisten con los humanos en forma de apps multiusos, como Gabumon con la predicción del tiempo, o colaboran con los bomberos o policía, como Dobermon. Daigo Tatara, campeón del Digimon Grand Prix, no se ha presentado este año 2023 y Ranma, vencedor de este año y segundo del anterior, se queja ya que ganar la competición sin el mejor rival participando no tiene valor. Daigo logró la poderosa ruta evolutiva Agumon - Greymon - Metalgreymon, nombrada la ruta "correcta" por los envidiosos, siendo todas las demás opciones consideradas erróneas o fallidas. Este es el motivo por el cual las calles están llenas de Digimon abandonados, como el ToyAgumon que recoge Daimon, precisamente porque se siente culpable de ser el causante de que se desechen Digimon. ToyAgumon está teniendo una pesadilla recordando a su antiguo compañero Kan-chan quien lo abandonó después de que evolucionara de Koromon a ToyAgumon, debido que al no ser Agumon no podría evolucionar a la ruta correcta, la del campeón. El compañero Digimon de Daigo murió hace un año, poco después de ganar la competición en una emocionante remontada final, y desde entonces ha permanecido en forma de Digihuevo. Después de contarle esto a ToyAgumon, éste le lleva a un edificio abandonado donde hay más variantes de Digimon y que por ese motivo han sido abandonados; entre ellos Hyougamon, Nisedrimogemon, Psychemon, Tsukaimon y Mikemon. Todos ellos están refugiados para protegerse del cazador de Digimon desechados del que ToyAgumon salvó a un compañero actuando como cebo y fue cuando Daigo se lo encontró lleno de heridas. ToyAgumon le pide a Daigo que los entrene para que se vuelvan fuertes y así demostrar que no merecen seguir siendo abandonados. Es una buena oportunidad para que Daigo se libere de la culpabilidad que lo atormenta por haber usado un Digimon fuerte y ser el causante indirecto de esta situación. Daigo acepta aunque admite que el problema no es ser más fuertes ya que los chicos de hoy en día prefieren perder con un Gabumon que ganar con un Geremon. Con su entrenamiento Daigo logra que Psychemon evolucione en Gururumon, pero pronto muere junto con los demás cuando el cazador de Digimon abandonados aparece de nuevo, quien resulta no ser otro que Ranma Tachikawa y su compañero Megadramon, el oponente de Daigo en el campeonato del año pasado y ganador de este año. Lo hace con el objetivo de que su Digimon absorba los datos y así se haga más fuerte, en resumidas cuentas, para poder vencer a Daigo algún día. De nuevo, Daigo siente que todo lo que ocurre es culpa suya. ToyAgumon le anima y le dice que nada fue un error, ni las variaciones de evolución ni lo que hizo Daigo y ahora es momento de demostrarlo. ToyAgumon con el apoyo de Daigo hace una evolución jogress, se fusiona con el los datos de sus amigos muertos y evoluciona en SkullGreymon, quien se enfrenta al Megadramon evolucionado en Gigadramon de Ranma. SkullGreymon le arranca los brazos primero para que no pueda contraatacar y lo remata disparando su “Pájaro del Olvido”, convirtiéndolo en Digihuevo. Ranma se rinde y se marcha. A continuación, SkullGreymon empieza a desaparecer, al fin y al cabo una evolución jogress con Digimon muertos no podía durar mucho. No deja Digihuevo esta vez, pero si Daigo ha aprendido algo de ellos es a no culparse más, fue su elección y morir después de una victoria era lo que deseaban. Daigo siempre los recordará y ahora se siente preparado para que su digihuevo eclosione por fin porque ha desechado la culpa y ha adoptado una actidud positiva de que será capaz de entrenar de nuevo a su Digimon. La historia termina con Daigo regresando al D-1 Grand Prix 2024 con un Greymon, pero no uno normal sino uno jamás visto, se trata de una variante (Greymon 2010 de Xros Wars).

"This is the story of the collapse of our world and how my life's final 'Song' remained unfinished."

One fine day, Apocalymon, a being from another world, appeared in the world where humans and Digimon had been clashing for 10 years. He conveyed his decision to destroy this ceaseless conflict-ridden world. However, he declared that he would grant the Digimon and humans residing there another chance to survive. On the final day, they must explain what should be done to put an end to the wars in the world.

X days remain until the destruction of the world.

Apocalymon busca destruir el mundo donde Digimon y humanos están en conflicto. ¿Cuál es la respuesta que la niña amante de la música, Kou, encuentra junto a sus compañeros?

"Esta es la historia del colapso de nuestro mundo y cómo la última 'Canción' de mi vida quedó inconclusa."

Un buen día, Apocalymon, un ser de otro mundo, se apareció en el mundo donde humanos y Digimon llevaban 10 años enfrentándose para comunicarles su decisión de destruir este mundo en el que no cesa el conflicto. Sin embargo, dice que dará otra oportunidad a los Digimon y humanos que lo habitan para que sobrevivan. El último día deberán explicarle qué se debería hacer para acabar con las guerras en el mundo.

Quedan X días para la destrucción del mundo.

"Candy Shop Kogaya" by Fukunari Kanchi

Synopsis: Minami and Tatsuki protect the weakened BlackTailmon. The two of them head towards Tatsuki's grandmother's candy shop, "Kogaya." Tatsuki defends the store against NeoDevimon, who threatens to destroy it, with the help of his evolved BlackAgumon into MagnaKidmon, and they engage in a fierce battle.

“Tienda de dulces Kogaya”: Minami y Tatsuki protegen al debilitado BlackTailmon. Ambos se dirigen hacia la tienda de dulces de la abuela de Tatsuki, “Kogaya”. "Reincarnation in Another World as the king of ogres (ジュウオーガー)" by Hadame Matatabi

Synopsis: Upon waking up, the protagonist finds himself transformed into Leomon! However, his happiness is short-lived as he comes to realize the inevitable fate of Leomon, which is to die without fail...

When he finally has the opportunity not only to be reborn but also in the long-awaited Digital World, he realizes that he will soon die again. Perhaps he is in a hellish place, paying for his sins, or perhaps the chance to be reborn as Leomon is to settle things. How ironic it is that he finds himself reborn as the valiant warrior, Leomon, whose courage has repeatedly led him to his demise. Liollmon apologizes for being a bad younger brother and implores him for another chance.

"Reencarnación en otro mundo como el rey de los ogros (ジュウオーガー)" : Al despertar, el protagonista se encuentra transformado en Leomon. Sin embargo, su felicidad es efímera al darse cuenta del destino inevitable de Leomon, es decir, una muerte asegurada...

Cuando por fin tiene la oportunidad no solo de renacer, sino que además hacerlo en el tan ansiado Mundo Digital, se da cuenta de que pronto morirá de nuevo. Quizás está en un infierno donde rendir cuenta por sus pecados o quizás la oportunidad de renacer en Leomon es para que termine lo cerrar sus asuntos. Qué ironía que justamente haya renacido en el valeroso guerrero Leomon, a quien esta valentía precisamente lo ha llevado tantas veces a la muerte. Liollmon le pide perdón por haber sido un mal hermano menor y le implora que le de otra oportunidad.
